PMI currently offers five credentials for qualified professionals.  These credentials represent a variety of discipline and experience across the career framework associated with the profession of project management.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)
The CAPM is considered an essential first step for project team members.  The CAPM credential can benefit a wide range of individuals who want to demonstrate a comprehensive and consistent understanding of the application of their work.  By gaining knowledge of project management processes and terminology, project team members can enhance their contributions to the team’s success.  The CAPM is designed for project team members who:

  • Provide subject matter expertise (e.g. marketing, finance, customer care, processing, fulfillment).
  • Serve as project team sponsors, facilitators, liaisons or coordinators.

For more information, review the CAPM credential handbook.

Project Management Professional (PMP®)
One of the most valued credentials in project management, the PMP credential assures employers that you are committed to project management.  Earning and maintaining this credential demonstrates a solid foundation of experience in effectively managing projects.  Those bearing the PMP credential:

  • Perform their duties under general supervision and are responsible for all aspects of the project for the life of the project.
  • Lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects within the constraints of schedule, budget and resources.
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to appropriately apply a methodology to projects that have reasonably well-defined project requirements and deliverables.

For more information, review the PMP credential handbook.

Program Management Professional (PgMPSM)
One of PMI's most robust credentials, the PgMP has been developed for professionals who manage multiple related projects that are aligned with an organization's strategy.  Those with the PgMP credential have successfully completed a rigorous multi-stage knowledge, skills and experience assessment process.  Those that have achieved the PgMP credential demonstrate that they:

  • Are responsible — under minimal supervision — for the coordinated management of multiple related projects directed toward strategic business and organizational objectives. These programs contain complex activities that may span functions, organizations, geographic regions and cultures.
  • Define and initiate projects and assign project managers to manage cost, schedule and performance of component projects, while working to ensure the ultimate success and acceptance of the program. Program managers are responsible for determining and coordinating the sharing of resources among their constituent projects to the overall benefit of the program.
  • Possess the knowledge and skills needed to be effective in both the project and business or government environment and to make decisions that accomplish strategic objectives. They should have advanced skills in finance, cross-cultural awareness, leadership, communication, influence, negotiation and conflict resolution.

For more information, review the PgMP credential handbook.

PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMPSM)
One of PMI's newest credentials.  This credential demonstrates those who have obtained the risk management skills necessary to provide the expertise in the specialized area of assessing and identifying project risks along with preparing plans to mitigate risk and capitalize on opportunities.  Those that hold and maintain the PMI-RMP credential:

  • Assess and identify project risks.
  • Mitigate threats and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Report and communicate the risks to the project team.

For more information, review the PMI-RMP credential handbook.

PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SPSM)
One of PMI's newest credentials.  It is considered essential for the dedicated and proficient scheduler seeking to distinguish themself within the profession.  This credential acknowledges those who strengthen and support project management by offering knowledge specific to project scheduling.  Those that hold and maintain the PMI-SP credential:

  • Create and maintain the project schedule.
  • Are able to analyze the project schedule.
  • Routinely report and communicate the schedule to the project team.

For more information, review the PMI-SP credential handbook.
